On April 19th 1741 Mary Parker, dressed in a white sheet, read out a "penance" in Appleby Church, confessing before the congregation to an illicit liaison with John Parker, the son of Thomas Parker. I would be very interested to determine the exact relationship of these people and also to learn more about the rector, George Gell, who brought the case to the attention of the archdeaconry court and supervised the public penance. If anyone can help with this would be most grateful.
