I am researching Joseph Gent married to Millicent and living in Appleby Magna in 1672, and Humpfrey Gent, husbandman living in Appleby Magna around 1570's. If anyone has information on these two people, or any other Gent's, I'd be most interested.

Hi - I spoke to you briefly on the Moat House footpath. I don't know much about Appleby family history but I happened to come across some articles in old parish magazines that mention 'Gent'
Gent was apparently not a surname in the village in 1641 when 58 surnames were recorded.
It was a surname in the period 1698 to 1707 when 45 new surnames were recorded.
Gent was also recorded as a surname in 1820.
I am not sure whether this adds anything to what you already know but I thought I would pass it on

The fact that you have found Humfry Gent in the 1570s suggests that you have already been through the parish registers which survive from 1572. I'm not sure where you can go from there. The registers of course will track the family forward from then. Jon has found some articles that I wrote back in the 1980s when I attempted an analysis of surnames of people moving in and out of the village.John Gent of 1813-14 was a labourer. He and An his wife had children baptised: George 9 May 1813 and Frances 1 Nov 1814. Another Frances Gent, a servant, brought an illegitimate son Thomas for baptism 26 March 1815. Richard
