Thursday, 12 September 1811 Derby Mercury 4139, MARRIAGE - On Thursday, 29th ult, Thomas MOORE Esq of Chilwell, son of George MOORE Esq of Appleby Leicestershire, to Miss Elizabeth Webb EDGE, daughter of Thomas Webb EDGE Esq of Strelley in the county of Nottingham.
I am a little confused as to which George Moore this refers as I do not see the above marriage of Thomas in the family tree shown in the History section.
I would appreciate confirmation that it is George (1743-1813) and any further information on this Thomas Moore of Chilwell.

I can confirm that Thomas Moore (1783-1852) was the son of George Moore (1743-1813). He married Elizabeth Webb-Edge of Strelley on 19th August 1811 according to my info. I do have quite a lot of further info about Thomas but first could you let me know your reason for interest. Are you a descendant for example? The reason for not including Thomas in my article about the Moores of Appleby is that he was not directly in their story when I was writing. Richard

Richard,
Excuse the late reply - have had visitors and been distracted from family history.
I am researching Elizabeth Gothard born at the Moat House in 1853, who moved to Nottingham at the age of 16 to be a nurse in the household of Lt. Stanhope Sprigg of the Highland Militia and his wife Emma Bowman Sprigg. (Since the surname Bowman comes into the Gothard family with another marriage, I was wondering if she was from the Appleby Magna line.)
Elizabeth married Thomas Butler Cutts - my gt.grandfather. He belonged to a family of lace manufacturers in Nottingham and had a wealthy uncle of the same name. This uncle had a brother William Moore Cutts b.1834 and we have as yet been unable to define the reason for his middle name.
My 5 x gt.grandfather, Samuel Butler married Elizabeth Charlton -whose family were from Chilwell and are well documented. Samuel Butler lived on the Stanhope estate.
I would like to expand my knowledge of the background of the families - particularly the Spriggs. There are other Butler relatives with connections in the Militia.
I am also wondering if the Gothard surname at Appleby could be a corruption of Goddard and if they could have moved into the area via the waterways in earlier generations?

I have tried to leave a private message for you. Log in and click on the word 'messages' at the top of this page. [This is a bit experimental - I haven't tried it before!] Richard
