Hi everyone,
My name is Kim and I am seeking information about my grandfather, Horace Lowe.
My links to his family are practically none, as most known relatives from my father's side of our family passed away many years ago. The remaining relatives are also in the dark.
According to Horace death certificate, his parents were Joseph Lowe and Elizabeth Gordon. He and my grandmother, Lily Nowell were married in Camberwell and emigrated to Australia in 1930 with their young family. Their marriage certificate states that Joseph was an Assistant Underground Manager.
My searching has lead to Horace Lowe, who was born in either Appleby Magna or Newton Nethercote (records differ) in 1897, son of Joseph and Elizabeth Jordan. I am hoping that someone would have some recollections of the family and might be able to tell me if this Horace might possibly be our Horace. The other children in this family were Catherine (Measures), Alfred, George, Joseph and Leonard.
Any information at all would be gratefully appreciated.
kind regards to all

Hi - Kim, welcome to the forums.
I've just done a search of the Parish Registers and the 1891 and 1901 censuses and there is very little trace on anyone with the Lowe surname.
If fact I only found 1 Lowe. In the 1891 census - Philip Lowe aged 5 living with his grandparent, grandfather being George Jordan. In 1911 he was still living at the same property, but is now a railway porter.
Nothing at all in the Parish Registers, so guessing not an Appleby Family.
The Jordans of course are a very well know local family with a great number of entries in the Censuses and Parish Registers.
Good luck with your research.

Hi and thanks Chris. I really appreciate your research on my behalf. Elizabeth is the daughter of George and Catherine Jordan, who look as though they were Appleby residents for much of their lives. I will look at the Phillip Lowe link as this might be a puzzle piece. I can't thank you enough for your generosity. I will keep looking further afield.
kind regards. Kim

Actually, Alfred William Phillip Lowe, would have been 5 years old at the 1891 Census. It may be that he was known as Phillip and living with his grandfather at that time.

Hi
I know of a Lowe family in Appleby Magna. I grew up there and still live near the village. I went to school with Stephen (or Steven ?) and his brother (whom of which I can't remember his name) who would be around 28 years of age now. Their mum and dad lived in Parkfield Crescent, Appleby Magna. They may still be there. Maybe it's worth a search on Yell.com or BT Phonebook.
If you are still looking for contacts i'd be happy to track them down for you. It would only be a case of asking a few folk on social media, or friends in the village.
My email is sophie.smith2012 @ aol.com if you still wish to pursue this. I realise this post is nearly a year old but you may still be searching!
Kind regards
Sophie
EDIT - some extra spaces added to the email address to try and avoid capture by web crawlers.
Thanks for the input- Admin.

I am trying to track family history and have got to stuck looking for a marriage of Thomas Tunnadine and Sarah Jordan, my research has tracked the Tunnadine family to Appleby and I wondered if anyone can shed some light of the parents of both Thomas and Sarah.

The first entry in the St. Michael's Parish Registry for the name Tunnadine is the record of the marriage of Thomas (of the Parish of Austry) and Sarah Jordan (of Appleby), June 30th 1696.
So for Thomas's parents you would need the Austry Parish Registers (I have no idea if they are digitised anywhere).
Jordan is a well know Appleby name - if you find the marriage record for Thomas and Sarah in the Registers then search backwards in time there are multiple Jordan, Jordane records , the spelling of Jordan does seem to be a bit "fluid" at times.

I am a descendant of Sarah's brother John Jordan. My family did a very thorough search some years ago. The detailed chart which they produced shows Sarah's birth as 1670 and her marriage to Thomas Tannadine, a cooper and churchwarden, as 30.1.1696.
My copy of the transcription appears to show the entry for Sarah's baptism in 1670, on page 101, "Sarah, d. of John & Ann Gorden. bap. Mar 8." and the entry for their marriage, page 128, "Thomas Tunnadine of par. Austery & Sarah Jordan of this par. marr.Jan. 30".
A Thomas Tunnadine is shown as being buried on 10.10.1773....possibly a descendant.
I hope this is helpful.

....and Sarah's parents were John Jordan, 1649-4.2.1692, who married Ann in 1668 and she died ?24.8.1716.
My chart shows an 'unproven' link to John's parents as Joseph Jordan 1608-24.2.1653, who married Ursilla in 1637, and she died in 1670.
Joseph's parents were William Jordan, b. 1570 or 1580 d. 28.2.1624, who married Ann in 1600, and she died in 1640.
Please do post if you confirm or disprove any of this. Good luck!

Jean - many thanks for the input.
You are correct, Thomas and Sarah's wedding was in January and not June as I previously posted - old age and finger trouble !!
With their multiple spelling variations the Jordan's must be one of the most difficult family to trace in Appleby.
Unfortunately the most recent poster hasn't responded in a while, so an early response is not indicted.
But again many thanks for your contribution.

I’m busy re tracing my family roots. For so long I’ve believed that my midland roots were in Nottingham but my sleuthing has taken me to Ashby and now Appleby. I would like to follow this up through this thread if possible so I thought I’d just send this message first to establish contact. So, hello …. Is this thread still live? Peter
