The prefered route of HS2 goes within 100ft of Old Rectory. At least it looks as though the Hotel is for the chop. All the time we in AHEM spent trying to stop its development and it takes a train to demolish it !

Albert - The Old Rectory - 100 yards or 100 meters (track or embankment) ? Personally I will be absolutely delighted to see the HS2 whizzing past Appleby. It will mean I will be around 90 years old and still here to see it - I'll settle for that

It was the owner of the Old Rectory who quoted 100ft. It's still too close for comfort methinks looking at the map. I wonder how many trains per hour go whizzing by ? Ah well Chris, I shall hear the rumble of it when I'm 6ft under. ;D

Still struggling to understand why the line is on this side of the M42/A42. It goes so close to Appleby and Austrey this way, not to mention slicing through the back end of Measham and all the commercial accommodation there, including AB produce - our MP must be absolutely delighted - it must be a really expensive choice. How do we get involved in discussions with these people?
At least we haven't got it as bad as the folk in Diseworth, who will be effectively trapped in an island between the rail line, the motorway and the airport.

I think that you will find that the land contours on the other side of the M42/A42 were not suitable.

The next Appleby Parish Council meeting is on February 7th.
I would suspect that the topic will be raised, and members of the public can attend and voice their concerns.

No matter where the route is, many villages will have concerns. To shift the route (even a few hundred yards) at one place of concern may create great diificulties in land contour/other villages etc a few miles up or down the track. I would imagine that route planning over many, many miles is an utter nightmare. Planners have to take into account how to get heavy earth moving machinery etc etc onto site too. (We have the M42 ! .......... Pity!! )

After the dreaded hotel was approved, the subsequent archaeological dig revealed the late Roman farm and added a new aspect to Appleby's history. It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good!

It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good! Now that's a great idea, Richard.......Put the proposed wind farm along the HS2 track. The wind generated by the trains passing at 250 MPH will keep the sails turning on calm winter's days.

If a property is so close to the HS2 line that the owner receives full market value in compensation, can he still keep the house ? .......... " Pay and stay!"
Or does the HS2 company, who paid the compensation, now take it over and sell it on eBay? ;D
