My gr grandmother was Ada Kendall, her husband Frank. In village memories Ada is known as the midwife. What happened to Frank and Ada? They lived at Botts Lane Appleby, the house was taken down, when? Anyone with information please?

I don't know when the house was taken down, Joan, but there is a bit of information about the Kendalls, and their son Tom, on this page on our history site: www.applebymagna.org.uk/appleby_history/history_tour_botts_lane.htmlPerhaps one of the Layland family know when the house disappeared, as it appears they lived their after Ada and Frank.

Joan I've asked around and the Laylands say they don't know anything about the Kendalls except that their ancestor, Joseph Layland, bought 22 Botts Lane from them just after WW1. The Laylands sold the house in February 1979. Not too long after that it was knocked down and rebuilt as it now. There's more of a story on that which I'll put on the web site with a photo as soon as I can. There are other mentions of Kendall on the history site (you can search for the name). They are mentioned in the 1841 census, I see, but at that time no. 22 Botts Lane was 3 cottages and none was occupied by the Kendalls - see the bit about Botts Lane in this article: www.applebymagna.org.uk/appleby_history/in_focus20_1841_census_part_2.htmMarilyn

I've just added an old picture of the former 22 Botts Lane to the history site. Many thanks to Lucy Layland for providing it. Here's the link - scroll down the page a little. There's a bit of text added about the place. <Clickie>Marilyn

Thank you for the photo and info, the house is bigger than I expected. Does anyone know what happened to Frank or Ada Kendall after the house was sold, or indeed does anyone have memories of them in the village as it is quoted that Ada was the village midwife. Thank you
