In the 1881 census Jane Gamble's occupation is shown as an 'SMS nurse' , can anyone tell me what the SMS means?
Think Jane may be related to my Beadman ancestors in Appleby.

I just put 'SMS nurse' into Google which came up witha Genuki site for occupations (for Lincolnshire as it happens but applicable elsewhere I'm sure). I quote: Nurses were in big demand, often providing homecare for the aged and disabled. Up until 1919 anyone could call themselves a Nurse. Putting "Nurse SMS" (Subsidiary Medical Services, i.e. anyone other than a properly qualified medical doctor) on a census form would have been an attempt to indicate that one was properly experienced and employed and not just the woman-up-the-road-who "did".
