As a metal detectorist I discovered this site whilst researching a site on the Leics/Derbys border that my father and I have recently found several Roman coins and other items on. As newcomers to the hobby we've not a great deal of land to detect on but are looking for suitable land (no matter how small!!) outside of the Derbyshire area. We're both members of a local club and always fill our holes in with as little disturbance as possible. We're happy to share our finds with the landowners and would be interested to hear from anyone who could help us. Travelling is not a problem and you never know, you may be sitting on a fortune!!
Thanks...Andre Craddock derby_md@yahoo.co.uk

Andre, if you have discovered Roman coins in this vicinity, why not share this exciting and valuable historical information with us? There haven't been too many Roman finds at Appleby (until the Hotel Metro site was dug by Leicester archaeologists). The Roman period is one that we need much more info. about. Hopefully you have already reported finds through your club which will be affiliated to the national metal detecting society with its recommended code of conduct - Richard D

We're both members of a local club and are going thru the process of joining either the NCMD or FID (we've yet to decide). Any worthy finds are reported to the local Finds Liason Officer who's probably sick of us turning up with pocketfuls of junk! We've several finds displayed on the Portable Antiquities Scheme website at www.finds.org.uk but unfortunately I can't currently locate them despite searching for over an hour! I'm also in the process of designing a website displaying more info on us and our finds but as usual, it's on the backburner!

Thanks Andre. I have just been trying to search using the PAS website - and got nowhere. User-friendly it is not! All I was looking for is a simple description of item, like 'late Roman coin', and an approximate location in this area, preferably with a Grid Reference. Maybe you have such a list for your own finds? I'm pretty sure that there was a Roman Road, if not two, near Appleby, the old A453 route and the A444. The next village towards Burton along the A444 is Stretton-en-le-field. 'Stretton' of course means Street town - but where's the street (road)? The small Roman farm which stood on the site of the Hotel Metro was close to where these two routes cross (this is now Junction 11 of M42). So any finds in the area would add considerably to our local knowledge of the Roman occupation. - Richard D
