I have details of my SMITH ancestors in Appleby Magna during the period of c. 1700 to c. 1810.
In particular looking for the marriage of Lydia SMITH to John WAGSTAFF of Checkley, Staffs; about 1805-1810. First child, George WAGSTAFF born 15.12.1810 Appleby - cannot find his baptism.
Lydia SMITH was the daughter of Timothy SMITH and Catherine COLLIER who married 1769 at Appleby. Timothy and Catherine SMITH are both buried in Appleby churchyard.
Would anyone know if the gravestones are still there?
Timothy SMITH buried 3.3.1834
Catherine SMITH buried 21.2.1833

This is a difficult one. All burials before about 1880 were in the old churchyard - around the church. With churchyard maintenance a problem, the gravestones were moved and laid flat about 50 years ago but still kept in the churchyard. Those lying around the church, within the mown area, can be examined and although this is not ideal, there are many to be seen and they are legible. Quite a few were relocated to the east side of the churchyard above the wall separating it from the Moat House. These are now buried in nettles &c and therefore not easily accessed without some determination. I can only suggest that you come and spend some time searching - if that's possible.

I overlooked one important piece of info. At the time the gravestones were moved a survey was carried out by the Appleby Women's Institute. I think they recorded positions of graves (before and after being moved? - I'm not sure) as well as the writing on them. One copy of the survey went to the Leicestershire Record Office where it should still be possible to consult it.

Thanks Richard for your replies. I intend visiting Nuneaton in the summer and Appleby is on my way from the North. Hopefully I will have a few hrs to scour the churchyard but maybe I had better take some shears and anti-histamine cream for the nettles!
I'll try also on the visit to get to Leics Record Office. But may have to pay for research. At least I have the burial dates; so that should cut down time and cost hopefully.
Thanks again for your info. I found the Appleby website very informative and interesting.

One of my AM ancestors - William Litherland - married Elizabeth Smith in Osgathorpe in 1739. I believe Elizabeth also came from AM, possibly christened 1716, dau of Timothy and Elizabeth. Any connection with your AM Smiths?
