This may be a long shot,but.... I'm with a group up here in Scotland that records all of the information on gravestones throughout our county and publishes the content for reference. Many of the stones we are working on at presnt are from the 1600's and have a lot of useful information for genealogical research. Does anyone do this in your area at all? I'd certainly like to see if there are any stones for members of my Stretton & Wyatt families there but it's about a 500 mile drive down! If no-one does do this there, but is interested in starting a group up, I can certainly provide details on how we operate up here.

Derek -
This may be just a rumour, but I heard that the Appleby WI did something regarding the gravestones, might have been just recording names etc.. I have no clear information what it was they actually did or why or when.
But it might worth using the contact information pages on the main village website to get in touch with the WI to check if this information is correct or not.

The WI certainly did a survey of the old churchyard before the memorial stones were moved and placed flat on the ground (wouldn't be allowed now!). This was 40 or more years ago! Some of the older WI members may be able to tell you more. The resulting album was sent to the Record Office at Wigston where you should be able to see it. Richard

Dear all, I've just joined this forum, and have seen your messages from previously. Can I ask, did anyone have any luck with finding out if there is a record somewhere of the graves - and maybe a plan/information regarding where certain graves are to be found in the churchyard? I am researching the 'Boss' family, who were resident in the village from the early 1700s to 1900s and would like to see if I can locate any of my ancestors graves, when I visit in June.
Any information beforehand would be very welcome. Thanks. Helen

According to their website, Leicestershire records office have the WI's survey filled at reference DE2367. I've never been to see it though, so I don't know in what format it is or what it contains.
