A new word, vishing, is being used to describe a form of attempted personal information theft.
The "old fashioned" practice of phishing tries to get you to disclose information or to click on undesirable links by sending emails.
Vishing has the same intent, but the scammers contact you by phone, v for voice, so vishing.
You will get a call from someone with a very heavy Indian subcontinent type of accent, claiming to be from Microsoft, The World Wide Web or similar, telling you that they have detected problems with your PC. This is a 100% pure scam, usually to try to persuade you to load their software on your pc to solve the "problem" - do not allow them to access your pc, or load their software.
They can be very convincing, so best not to try and engage with them unless you have some knowledge of Microsoft Windows internals.
What can you do :-
(1). Hang Up. (2). Say you don't have a PC (the caller has no idea). (3). Tell them you are an Apple Mac user. They will hang up - Mac users are beyond all hope and cannot be helped by anyone
But as always - keep your anti-virus and anti-malware up to date, and avoid the temptation of I wonder what will happen if ................
