I notice on you web site about Appleby Magna's history that in a diary of James Tunnadine he records that the new church organ was played by Edward Mammatt. This is my 2nd great grand father and I am interested to trace the diaries. Can anyone help. June

June - the references to E. Mammatt appear (as you know) in Richard Dunmore's InFocus series, so Richard may be the only person that can assist.
However, the article regarding the organ states that Mr Mammatt (a blind man) opened the organ, rather than playing it, so some sort of official "opening" ceremony ? So it would seem he was a reasonably important local figure if he was asked to perform the opening ceremony (just a guess).
If you search for the name Mammatt using the history web site's built in search function (to be found in the left hand column of each page) there are multiple other references to that name that might be worth checking as well.

Thank you! I have contacted Richard to say what I know. Edward Mammatt was my 2nd great grandfather and was Edward Mammatt of Ashby de la Zouch the son of the Edward Mammatt who was resident at Overseal Cottage in Pigot's directory. The blind Edward Mammatt who "opened" the organ may very well have played it as he was a renowned musician and composer who had been organist at St Helen's in Ashby since a boy. His father was the Edward who built the baths and Royal hotel in Ashby as he was steward to the Marquis of Hastings.

Hello June, I have not found your message in this message board and my email address is not in general use. The diary was in the hands of the late Mr Gordon Parker until his death c. 2000. I presume that his wife then took care of it, but she too has since died so you would think that someone in their family now has it. There were no children. However, I quoted more or less directly from the words in the diary and I do not believe that there was any other useful material about the Mammatts or any one else, other than what you already have.
Richard
