Interesting reading from Appleby in the News! Obviously, the Rev. Steedman never came to Appleby as the next Incumbent after Parson Davies was the Rev. Rex. Meakin.
The consistory court case involving Rector Moore is interesting as he was also involved in the Wakeford Case which is well documented in a book by John Treherne called Dangerous Precincts, and also involved the Rector of Netherseale, Herbert Worthington.
In those days appointments were the gambit of the patron of the parish and the patronage at Appleby would be the squire. Later the patronage passed to the Diocese, and interregnums started to get longer and longer.
Nowadays, the 'presentation' is suspended and and Appleby is part of a clergy team where fixed contracts are in vogue and the 'living' is no longer for life, or until the age of 70 as was brought in during the 1980s.
Appointments are now often made by competitive interview but any choice has to be ratified by the Bishop.
