Am writing a history of Lullington Cricket Club. In 1859 'Echalez senior & Echalez junior' should have played cricket at Barton under Needwood, but were listed as 'absent'
I am trying to establish if it is Echalez from Appleby or Echalez (vicar of Lullington) who should have played. Is there any evidence that the Revd John Echalez of Appleby had an interest in cricket?

According to White's Directory of Derbyshire 1857, Revd Theodore Echalaz (note spelling) was vicar of Lullington. Revd John Manuel Echalaz was rector of Appleby from 1830 until his death in 1877. Whether they were brothers, as one might suspect, I do not know. Revd John had at least two sons: Richard who, aged 22, was killed in a riding accident at Canterbury in 1857 and Herbert who died in 1869 aged 26. There is a window memorial to them in the chancel of Appleby church. I have no knowledge of Revd Theodore, nor of any interest in cricket. Perhaps Revd Theodore had a son and they both played. It was certainly a manly public school type of game to play. - Richard D.

Thank you for your swift response to my query concerning the two Revd Echalaz. Theodore and John Manuel were brothers and both had sons. Hence either could have been the Echalaz who failed to turn up to the cricket at Barton under Needwood in August 1859. One of the two Revd gentlemen clearly had an interest in cricket - I cannot see the possibility of there being a third echalaz with son in the area.
The Revd Theodore Echalaz died at Hastings in December 1858. This, however, may not solve the matter. Is it possible that his death was not known at Barton under Needwood and this seems a reasonable reason for being absent from the game. Only today I have discovered that at -- Echalaz (no initials) was reported in the Burton Times as playing at Barton in 1860 - interestingly it was only one Echalaz in the team - could it be that his father was Theodore who had died in December 1858? Is it really feasible that the organisers were unaware of the death of Theodore some seven months before the match? Maybe the teams had been announced following a similar match the year before?
In favour of it being Theodore and son who were expected at Barton in 1859 is the closer proximity of Lullington to Barton and that Lullington is more likely to qualify as being in the 'Neighbourhood' of Barton.
Appleby was possibly more into the traditional interpretaion of sport i.e. hunting etc and its Echalaz was into that pursuit. I have a newspaper account of a match involving Appleby and Netherseal in 1863 at which George Moore Esq. and other notables 'interested in cricket' were present. If George Moore was interested, so too might have been the Revd John Manuel Echalaz.
I fear that I have taken up too much of your time, for which many thanks. I also know that the school at Appleby played cricket against Lullington. Maybe I should try the school to see what records they have.
Kind regards

They were brothers, sons of Joseph Echalaz a London Merchant, I have a history of this family which I researched for my son in law a descendant of the same family, contact me at ginger_knob@me.com for further details.
