Hi, My family are listed on the 1851 census. They are entry 28 - I would be really grateful if someone could advise me how I can find out where they were living at this time. I had other Goodall relatives living at Appleby House in 1851 which I think became the Red Lion Inn. I would really appreciate help with this. Thanks.

Hazel - Only referencing properties by their census schedule number obviously makes it difficult to identify the actual houses. But in your case, because of the proximity of the school and Appleby Hall in the census listings (and a fair amount of local knowledge) I think it is possible to hazard a guess as to the location of your family's house in 1851. From the direction the census enumerator seemed to be travelling to record the houses, in the 1851 census "your" house is the third property South West(ish) of the school, whilst in 1841 it is the property immediately North East(ish) of Appleby Hall. In the 1841 census the farm is occupied by a William Stevenson and family. If this information is cross referenced with Richard Dunmore's analysis of the 1841 census (History Web Site - In Focus Article Number 19) the property is identified on the map as property number 266 (owned by George Moore). Property reference number 266 was (and still is) Hall Farm, on the South East(ish) side of the road just below the junction with Church Street. The road past the farm is now called New Road. Chris p.s. The Google Streetview of Hall Farm only seems to show the oldest farm outbuildings, maybe ones that were in existence when your family lived on the property The farmhouse can't be seen from the Google view. p.p.s. Just in case you haven't already found it, there is a picture of the old Red Lion via this link on the Appleby History Web site - www.applebymagna.org.uk/appleby_history/history_tour_rectory_lane.html

Hi Chris, Very many thanks for your reply, which has helped me enormously. My Mum and Dad live in the village, we moved there very much as outsiders in the 1970's and now find that we have a number of relatives who lived there between the 1850s until 1910. It seems such a coincidence that our relatives most likely lived at Hall Farm whereas we lived at The Lodge/The Gate House to the Hall. Its a small world isn't it. Again very many thanks, I really appreciate your help. Hazel
