I've studied these photos on the website and in the background is one of Hipwell's of Ibstock Bedford OWB buses.
These were a wartime product - Hipwells had two CUT343 new in 1944 and DAY146 new in 1945.
So this event must have been post-war!

Parson Davis retired in 1950 and I think that the Bishop is Guy Smith so the event must have been between 1945 and 1950.
We have studied the photographs again in detail and been able to identify a number of people. Several of these would only have been children in 1936 and are now grown up so the date must be around 1946. Agnes Rowland and her Mother, my Mum's Auntie Cath appear in the picture and they moved to Hammerwich by the time I was around in 1947. So that narrows it down.

Re-Rogation Sunday 1936? I know that the date for this Rogation Sunday is completely incorrect because I am in some of the photographs. I was born in 1937, and in the photographs - some of which I have with me here in Canada - I am the little girl in a brownie uniform, who is biting her nails. I am at the back row close to Sally (Stevenson) Hicks. I really do agree with Allan, this should be corrected before we elderly people are gone and there is no one to give the correct date.
I absolutely agree with you Allan.
Such an excellent web site should be as factual as possible for future generations. I did send a copy of one photograph to the web site approximately 10 years ago, showing that Rogation Sunday in 1946. I was definitely at that Rogation Sunday.
This is an excellent web site for a village the size of Appleby Magna and a great deal of the praise for the excellence goes to Marilyn. A GREAT job Marilyn!
Also praise must go to all the others who have contributed so much - Richard Dunmore - Alan Roberts - Allan Condie - Joan Noble - Chris Bee - Walter Ellis - Margaret Cater - Joseph Eyre - and last the story very close to my heart which was written by my God Mother Eileen (Chapman) Lower and submitted by her son Michael Lower.
All of my family here in Canada often read your web site, our sons and now the grand young people of my brother Gordon, my sister Kathleen and myself.
Thank you for reading this. Anne (Bates) SILINS - Chemainus, Vancouver Island, Canada.

Anne -
The Rogation Sunday photographs you are referencing, are they the photos that are included with Richard Dunmore's In Focus 24 article - High Days & Holidays ?
If yes - then it is not possible for Marilyn to change the date.
The date is actually part of the image as supplied by Richard, so cannot be separately modified. It is Richard's work, so only Richard could/should modify the image. The photographs are part of an article that is copyright protected in Richard's name.
So the text, describing the images as being from around 1936, is also Richard's copyright, so again cannot be changed without his permission.

Thank you for your quick answer to this issue of the date of the featured "Rogation Sunday 1936". I am sure that Richard Dunmore reads this "Discussion Board" and if not perhaps a member who works with the web site could bring it to his attention. I would be happy to send another copy of my photograph to him if needed. I understand the 'copyright', but when an error is made in an historical document I am sure the writer would wish it to be corrected...otherwise the author would look bad. Once again - thank you for replying Chris. Anne Silins

Hi everyone Anne has kindly written some memories of Rogation Day and I've published them on the history site here. The pictures in Richard's article were dated 'c1936' when he obtained them from Harold Oakley, who used to live in the Old Rectory. We don't know why Harold thought they were taken in 1936. Marilyn
