Hello, I'm looking for information about John Litherland who married Eleanor Pratt in 1618. I have been tracing my Yorkshire family and got as far back as Humphrey Litherland (no date of birth) but I know he married Maria or Mary Hyde in August 1623. Most of the family seem to come from Appleby Magna, but one or two were listed in Ancestry as from Breedon on the Hill, so perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place. Any help would be appreciated I've got quite a few holes in my research. Appleby Magna's parish records are brilliant I've found Humphrey's children. Many thanks.

Hi - Breedon on the Hill is only about 10 miles up what used to be the main road north from Appleby, so families moving between the villages (or living half way between) would not have been a problem for inter village marriages. I have found a baptism record for Eleanor Pratt, 7th Jan 1601 in Breedon on the Hill. Which would explain why her marriage to John Litherland was in Breedon. But unfortunately not where he came from. I haven't been able to find any birth records for John or Humphrey Litherland , but you are dealing with very early register entries, which may not have survived in readable form. The Leicestershire Record Office hold the Parish Registers for Breedon on the Hill, listing from 1562. Unfortunately there is no evidence of anyone transcribing and digitising the very early records for Breedon. I did come across this entry .... www.leicestershirevillages.com/breedononthehill/availablechurchandburialrecords.htmlwhich is obviously for a later period, but it struck me how few Litherlands were listed for the village. No marriages and only two births (and no father listed on either of the transcribed records). The Litherlands also seem to have largely "disappeared" from Appleby by the mid 1800's. Before 1702 there only appears to be one family of Litherlands registering births in Appleby (Humphrey & Maria), so a reasonable guess that John and Eleanor did not live in Appleby after their marriage (no baptism or burial records). As always, more questions than answers. Chris

Thanks Chris. I think I must have reached as far back as I can with John and Elinor. I've been through the Appleby Magna Parish records, what a godsend they are. and depressing, so many poor, paupers infant deaths etc. However I did find families of families up to the end of the record in 1804. It would have been great to look at Breedon's records. One family of John (1695) and Sarah Litherland went to Prestwold so I'll try my luck there. Thanks again.
