Partly to announce the publication of the second edition of A Son of the Rectory in digital format, if you haven't spotted it on the main web site, and partly to start speculation about the picture on the web site home page, taken from the book. Anyone spotted the animals? To read the book: A Son of the RectoryAnd to see the picture: Appleby Home Page

The animals aren't too difficult to spot - on the grass in front of the East wing (one looks like it's about to go up the steps).
The names I can't remember! Only Sonia has the answer to that one.

Good news -- the optician says he can give me a test on Tuesday.

These animals are off track - the manger with their hay is in the stables, at the other end of the building surely! Maybe there's a Nativity play coming up?

Not quite - these animals are just as happy eating anything in your garden ... and perhaps are not so saintly as you seem to be suggesting!

Let's hope there wasn't a troll in the coal-hole under the school steps - 'I'm a troll fol-de rol and I'll have you for supper!'

Well I was hoping for some inspired guesses at their names - still I suppose it means I won't have to award a prize!! In February 1984 Gordon Stuart wrote two letters to Aubrey Moore with his memories of 'The Grammar School House' where he lived as a child in the early 1920s. In the second he refers to the picture in the book and says this "includes my sister Audrey's two goats (Lulu and Madge). Madge is in front of the bottom left window & Lulu is by the steps leading up to the Riley's front door. They roamed freely around the large area of grass in front of the school and slept in the loose box in the stable. Their milk yield was on the small side" He gives lots more details of the state of the building and grounds at that time. When he ends he says "your book has revived so many happy memories of Appleby ... You will be amused to hear that even our goats have crept into your book!"
