This map which is in the care of the School Trustees is unique and contains information not to be found anywhere else. It is considered to be too precious to be made easily available for general borrowing. I used it for my In Focus articles on the 1841 census, where I presume you found reference to it. At the Appleby web-site current effort is focused on publishing on line Aubrey Moore's book A Son of the Rectory. After that is completed, consideration will be given to putting the 1831/32 map on line complete with its reference book. This may take a little while as quite a bit of work will be involved. There are no less than 988 'premises' across the parish detailed! - Richard

Thanks for the info Richard. Yes I read in your census article that my ancestor Thomas Ad(t)kins lived in a cottage somewhere between the Tamworth Rd and Measham Road. I will be visiting area in September and wondered if it was still there. Needed the old map to pinpoint exactly where it was.

I've just had a look at my article. Thomas lived in one of a pair of cottages at OS map reference SK 316 107, which is half way between Measham Road and the Tamworth road (old A453). I hope you won't be too disappointed to learn that there are no buildings there now - and haven't been for a long time. There is not even a track across the fields. You will get a rough idea where they were from the reference if you are good at map reading. - Richard

Once again thankyou for the info Richard. Shame the buildings are gone, but thats progress for you. While I'm in the area I will have a look armed with OS map.
