Some three years ago I contacted you, looking for 'lost' relatives in Appleby Magna. I recalled having visited the village as a six-year old in about 1947 with my mother. I remember we stopped off at a row of cottages above the road which lead into the centre of the village off the Tamworth Road At the time, and for many years afterwards, I believed they were relatives of my late father, William Powers, whom we met on that occasion. However, I have discovered quite recently, in the course of my family history research, that they were in fact relatives of my grandmother's sister, Mary Lily Winter (nee Payne) and her husband, James Winter, who married in Stratford on Avon in 1898. James was a native of Appleby, and I understand that the couple went to to live in the village after their marriage.
I would be very interested to learn of or hear from members of this family, my second cousins, who are still living in the Appleby area.
I hope you will be able to help me.

Additional info on 'my' Winter family from 1901 Census:
James Winter Age:26 head Occupation: groom/domestic gardener Born: Appleby, Leics.
Mary Lily Winter Age: 29 wife Born: Stratford, Warks.
Sidney Age 5 son Born: Stratford, Warks.
Violet M. Age: 2 daughter Born: Bricklehampton, Worcs. Alfred E. Age: 1 son Born: Cropthorne, Worcs Their address is given as 46, Sun St., Rugby
The 1901 Census records a number of Winters (James' siblings and parents?) living in Appleby Magna at the time, but I have not been able to sort them out as yet!

Further to the information posted above, since the 1911 census has become available I have discovered that the Winter family were living in Church Street, Appleby, at that time.
The youngest member of the family, Harold, aged 6 yrs, had been born in Appleby. His father, James, was employed as a farmer's waggoner and general labourer.
I would be very interested to receive further information about the Winter family.

In the 1970s, there were three Winters in the village that I remember. Howard lived at 24 Top St. the cottage next to Walkers Hall, across the entry. Howard used to sing in the Church choir. Brother and sister, Frank and Nellie ("Miss Winter") lived at 36 Mawbys Lane, the central almshouse. Frank used to do one of the almshouses gardens and Miss Winter was the efficient secretary of the PCC (church council) for many years. None of them married, all are long since gone.

I'm not sure wether your still interested as I've only just found this post (some 9 years later) - I understand (and I could be wrong) James Winter married Mary Lil Payne, Lil's sister Daisy married George Knight, they 5 children one of which Beryl Knight married Peter Purcell - I am their son.
If interested in discussing more let me know
Sorry, about the time delay

John -
Thanks for the contribution to the boards.
The original poster (Geoffrey Powers) posted as a guest so there is no way to tell if he has ever checked back to see if the thread has been updated, and it has been quite a while now.
Also, as a guest, we have no contact email address that could be used to let him know of any updates.
But you never know ..............................
