Allan
Your article is very interesting. I had no idea that passenger services on the railway through Snarestone closed as early as 1931.
Is the Ashby-Nuneaton 697 route the same as our current No. 7?
I'm going to have a closer look at those buses....

The current No. 7 operates via Twycross. The 697 went via Snarestone, Swepstone, Newton Burgoland, Shackerstone, Congerstone, Carlton, Market Bosworth, Cadeby, Sutton Cheney, Dadlington, Stoke Golding, and Higham on the Hill entering Nuneaton via Higham Lane. It effectively covered the old railway route as near as was practicable and took nearly two hours to cover what is just 15 miles as the crow flies.

So how much worse (if at all) is our public transport service today?
I miss the Nottingham to Birmingham bus that used to stop at the top of Rectory Lane as I used that a few times to go shopping (I hate city driving). It's also a shame it's not possible to get a bus to the railway station or to go shopping in Tamworth. The local service to Ashby doesn't seem much different though.

The X99 was a wonderful service, especially after you could buy a Midland "Red" day anywhere ticket from Conductors at 12/6d! You could then board the twenty to eight along the top as we used to call it and head Birmingham way. I once reached Ross on Wye and back in a day, but I had to cheat between Birmingham and Tamworth by using the train or I would have missed the last Ashby bound X99 - I missed it in Brum by 10 minutes. In the other direction, a trip to Nottingham was possible but as any further explorations required use of other operators it was more expensive.

I've added Allan's article (and an explanation of the pictures!) to the Appleby web site... <<click here>>
