Although I read on this forum that the Appleby history pages on this site haven't been updated since 2013 (as in applebymagna.proboards.com/thread/233/appleby-history-web-site "The Appleby History Web is (was) published by Information Byway cic. but has not been updated since 2013."), I wanted to say Thank you for the excellent local history information (e.g.
applebymagna.org.uk/appleby_history/in_focus29_church_restorations4.htm) (and applebymagna.org.uk/appleby_history/in_focus15_victorian_1.htm) which has been incredibly useful.
I am researching ancestors here in Settle in North Yorkshire of name Harger. Two ancestors (sisters Annie Elizabeth Armistead (1852-1897) & Mary Jane Armistead (b. 1846)) married clergymen who both happened to end up teaching at Appleby Grammar school:
The historical information on applebymagna.org.uk/appleby_history/ has been invaluable in clarifying the connection and the dates of the two gentlemen, if nothing else confirming & clarifying a reference/ambiguity that I read somewhere else that the above was headmaster at Appleby Grammar School, because in this neck of the woods, the use of "Appleby" infers Appleby in Westmoreland, not Leicestershire!
Kindest regards and many thanks
